These meetings are aimed for white folks working on their racism, and we invite white people to unedit their responses as much as possible, to really deeply process and notice the racism that lives inside of us. Way too many men tell women the same thing. Way too many white people tell people of color the time for anger has passed. And their expression of anger doesn’t in any way diminish the truth of what they are saying. Folks and folx are phonetically identical. As a white woman, I want to go on the record saying that black people and brown-skinned people have a lot of reasons to be angry. In the case of folx with the argument of inclusivity, this would be a hypercorrection of an already gender-neutral word, by using the current lexical trend. It has become a trend in gender neutral word creation to replace the last letter (typically a vowel) with an x. In my experience with white folx, there’s a disassociation and disconnect to history and part of our work as white people committed to racial justice is being really rooted and grounded in knowing our history.I studied linguistics in college (my focus was in Spanish, but I still think I can weigh in here.) what I think is happening, if we’re arguing that ‘folx’ is used for inclusivity, is hypercorrection. We may have gained upward mobility and advanced in society, but what was lost and how did our families become complicit in this country’s system of oppression when we “became white?” This meant letting go of customs, traditional ways of knowing and being, languages and more.
From this deeper knowing, it helps us understand the third pathway of our history.įor white families in the United States, there came a moment when the value of “whiteness” becomes greater than the value of maintaining cultural identities. While white folx can name being white, it can often be difficult for us to name our ethnicity/ancestry in its fullness. This type of ancestral recovery work is part of the healing work we have to do as white folx. We need to be rooted and grounded in knowing the histories of our own peoples. Knowing and understanding this is foundational for those of us who are committed to racial equity.
Our whiteness allows us to maintain a sense of power and privilege in this country. This helps us understand systems of power and how we have unearned power and privilege just by being born into our white skin. This will give us a deeper understanding of the social construction of white supremacy and how it plays out in policies, practices, procedures, cultural norms, what we have internalized and more.
